HB Series Heavy-duty Industrial Gearbox

HB Series Heavy-duty Industrial Gearbox

HB Series Heavy-Duty Industrial Gearbox is a rigid tooth flank gear unit designed for high-power, high-torque industrial drive applications. Raydafon supplies two sub-series: H series parallel shaft helical gear units covering sizes 3 to 26, and B series right-angle helical bevel gear units covering the same size range. Both series use 1 to 4 reduction stages with ratios from 1.25:1 to 450:1 and output torque up to 950 kN.m. Input power ranges from 2.8 kW to 5000 kW. Gears are carburized from high-strength alloy steel, hardened and profile-ground. The modular housing design allows horizontal mounting, vertical mounting, and conversion between parallel-shaft and right-angle configurations using a common housing. Input options include IEC-normalized motor flange and keyed solid shaft. Output options include keyed solid shaft, keyed hollow shaft, hollow shaft with shrink disk, and involute spline shaft. Mounting options include foot-mounted, flange-mounted, swing base-mounted and torque-arm-mounted. Applications include mining, cement, steel, chemical, power generation and material handling. OEM customization on ratio, shaft, flange and mounting configuration.

HB Series Heavy-Duty Industrial Gearbox — H Parallel Shaft & B Right-Angle Helical Bevel, Ratio 1.25:1 to 450:1, Torque up to 950 kN.m

The HB Series Heavy-Duty Industrial Gearbox is a rigid tooth flank gear unit engineered for high-power, high-torque industrial drive applications. Raydafon supplies two sub-series: H series parallel shaft helical gear units and B series right-angle helical bevel gear units. Both series share a common modular housing design — the same housing can be configured for parallel-shaft or right-angle output, which reduces the number of spare parts a plant needs to stock.

Gears are carburized from high-strength alloy steel, hardened and profile-ground. The H series uses helical gear pairs throughout, while the B series uses a combination of helical gear pairs and spiral bevel gear pairs for the right-angle stage. Gear cases are manufactured in close-grain cast iron (or welded steel plate for the largest sizes) for vibration absorption and low noise. The series is designed for horizontal mounting, vertical mounting and swing base mounting, with torque-arm mounting available for shaft-mounted configurations.

H Series Parallel Shaft vs B Series Right-Angle — Configuration Selection

Series Comparison

The HB Series covers two distinct shaft configurations within a common modular housing platform. The H series uses parallel shaft helical gearing, where input and output shafts are parallel. The B series uses a right-angle helical bevel configuration, where the input and output shafts are perpendicular. Choosing between them is primarily a question of machine layout — whether the drive must turn the power through 90 degrees or can run straight through.

Figure 01 HB series heavy duty industrial gearbox H series parallel shaft helical configuration
HB Series Gearbox — Housing Structure and Shaft Configuration The modular housing accepts both parallel-shaft (H series) and right-angle (B series) gear trains. The same housing casting is used across both configurations, with the internal gear set and bearing arrangement determining whether the output shaft runs parallel or perpendicular to the input. The large housing surface area and fan shroud work together to dissipate heat generated by the gear meshing.

Why Specify the Raydafon HB Series Heavy-Duty Gearbox?

Design Advantages

Six design characteristics separate the HB Series from a commodity industrial gearbox. Each one addresses a specific failure mode in heavy-duty drive applications.

Carburized and Profile-Ground Gears

Gears are machined from high-strength alloy steel, carburized to a controlled case depth, hardened, then profile-ground. The special tooth geometry modification achieves a larger tooth contact ratio than a standard involute profile, which distributes load across more teeth simultaneously. This reduces contact stress and extends gear life in continuous-duty applications.

Modular Housing — Parallel Shaft and Right-Angle from One Platform

The housing is designed as a common platform. The same casting serves both H series parallel-shaft and B series right-angle configurations. For plant maintenance, this means a single spare housing can replace either type, and the number of distinct spare parts is significantly reduced compared to dedicated housings for each configuration.

98.5% Helical / 97.5% Bevel Gear Efficiency

The H series achieves approximately 98.5% efficiency per helical gear pair. The B series achieves approximately 97.5% per bevel gear pair and 98.5% per helical pair. On a 1000 kW continuous-duty drive running 6000 hours per year, a 1% efficiency difference translates to roughly 60,000 kWh of electricity — a measurable operating cost reduction over the gearbox service life.

Sound-Absorbing Housing with Large Cooling Surface

The close-grain cast iron housing absorbs vibration more effectively than a welded steel fabrication. Combined with the large housing surface area and the fan/deflector shroud, the HB Series runs cooler and quieter than a conventional gearbox of the same power rating. External coolers and forced lubrication are available for high-speed or high-ambient-temperature applications.

Five Output Configurations — Shaft, Hollow, Shrink Disk, Spline, Flange

Output options include keyed solid shaft, keyed hollow shaft, hollow shaft with shrink disk, involute spline shaft, and solid shaft with output flange. The shrink disk option eliminates the keyway stress concentration and provides a friction connection that is easier to remove after years of service. The involute spline option handles higher torque in a smaller diameter than a keyed connection.

ISO 9001 Manufacturing and Full Traceability

Every unit is assembled under an ISO 9001 quality system. Gear tooth profile, case depth, housing bore concentricity and bearing fit are inspected in process. Each unit receives a run-in test with oil temperature monitoring before packing. Batch material certificates are retained and available with the shipment.

Figure 02 HB series heavy duty industrial gearbox internal gear layout helical bevel stage
Internal Layout — Helical and Bevel Gear Stages The H series contains one to four helical gear stages depending on the required ratio. The B series adds a spiral bevel stage for the right-angle turn, then one to three helical stages. Bearings are premium tapered roller or spherical roller types selected for the combined radial and axial loads the gearbox sees in service. Forced lubrication is used for vertical mounting and high-speed applications where splash lubrication alone is insufficient.
