A perfect example of this is the steering system on many cars. The steering wheel rotates a gear which engages the rack. As the gear turns, it slides the rack either to the right or left, depending on which way you turn the wheel.

Conventional railroads use the friction of wheels upon the rails, called "adhesion," to provide locomotive power. A cog, or rack, railroad uses a gear, or cog wheel, to mesh into a special center rack rail to climb much steeper grades than those possible with a standard adhesion railroad.

Gear Rack for Rack Actuator is a steel rack-and-pinion linear drive component designed for rack actuator systems in window openers, smoke ventilation, greenhouse climate control, elevator doors and industrial automation equipment. The rack uses a 2.0mm module tooth profile and is available in 8 standard models covering 1050mm, 1250mm, 1450mm and 1650mm lengths — each length is offered in curved and straight versions. Four matching pinion gears (GVP1.5AN, GVP1.5AC, GVP1.5BN, GVP1.5BC) cover A-type and B-type mounting with either natural or coated finishes. Back plates provide a stable mounting frame without the height of a construction beam. Precision-cut tooth profiles ensure smooth linear motion with minimal backlash.
